A versatile athlete, Harry was born and raised in Coldwater but moved to Orillia as a young man and considered it home. After dominating the local track and field scene, he entered the Canadian All-around Championship in 1898. This event was a precursor to the decathlon where the athletes competed in 10 events over one afternoon. Gill won the title that year and defended it again in 1899 and 1900. Gill dominated at the North American All-around championship in 1900, held in New Jersey where his score stood as a record for the next five years. In 1901 in a track meet in Toronto, Harry broke the world record for the discus and cleared the high jump bar just two inches below the world record.
