Nels dedicated a lifetime to Orillia minor baseball from the late 50″s to 2005 as a coach, manager and umpire. Nels was instrumental in starting minor baseball in Orillia. He was passionite about the sport and when he moved to Orillia and discovered there was no organized baseball program, he and others enlisted the help of the Orillia Legion and created a house league baseball program in the mid 1950’s. Nels loved baseball! The highlight with Orillia Minor Baseball came in 1966 when he coached a talented bantam team to a Provincial Championship which included Ricky Ley and John French, two future pro hockey players. Nels poured his heart and soul into baseball in Orillia.
