Born in Listowel, Ontario, Knox moved to Orillia at the age of 15. Walter Knox was recognized as one of Canada’s greatest all-round athletes, his 37-year career spanned from 1896 to 1933. Knox garnered 359 first place finishes, 90 seconds, and 52 thirds in formal competition. He has been inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1960, and the Orillia Hall of Fame in 1966. With many outstanding accomplishments, he is noted for his performance at the 1907 Canadian track and field championships, where Walter won five national titles: 100 yards, pole vault, long jump, discus, and shot put. Winning 5 different disciplines made him one of the world’s best athletes.

He toured the United States in 1908 and 1909 and competed in England and Scotland in 1911. Knox won the all-round world title in 1912 and in 1914. Knox coached the Canadian track and field team at the 1912 and 1920 Olympics and later became a travelling coach for the Ontario Athletic Commission and a coach at Queen’s University.
